Dr. Adolfo Guzmán Arenas


Dr. Adolfo Guzmán Arenas is a Communications and Electronics Engineer from the Higher School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN). He obtained his Master’s and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
He was a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at MIT; from the Department of Mechanical Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh; from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the IPN, where he founded the Master’s and Doctorate in Computing; from the Research Institute in Applied Mathematics and Systems, at UNAM, where he was Head of the Department of Computing; and the Interdisciplinary Unit (UPIICSA) of the IPN.
He was Director of the IBM Scientific Center for Latin America, IBM de México, S.A.
He has been a Senior Researcher at MicroElectronics and Computer Corporation; Vice President of Engineering at International Software Systems, and founder and President of SoftwarePro International, a company in Austin, Texas, dedicated to the development of commercial packages and Software Engineering tools.
He received from the Mexican Academy of Informatics the National Prize for Informatics (1994), and from the hands of President Zedillo (1996) the National Prize for Sciences and Arts (1996) and the Presea “Lázaro Cárdenas” (1997).
He founded the IPN Computer Research Center (CIC) in 1996 and directed it until 2002. Adolfo is a member of the Academy of Engineering (Academic of Honor), the Mexican Academy of Sciences, the Advisory Council of Sciences and the National System of Researchers (Emeritus National Researcher). He is Doctor Honoris Causa of the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). At the CIC he works on the use of Artificial Intelligence in the analysis of large amounts of data, representation of knowledge and applications of information systems
