Dr. Luis Agustín Álvarez-Icaza Longoria


Mechanical Electrical Engineer and Master in Electrical Engineering, both with Honorable Mention from the Faculty of Engineering, UNAM. He is a Doctor of Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, where he also did a postdoctoral stay.

He is currently a full-time C Titular Researcher at the Engineering Institute of UNAM. He has Level D in PRIDE and III in SNI.

He has been Deputy Director of Electromechanical Engineering at the Engineering Institute and Coordinator of the Master and Doctorate Program in Engineering at UNAM. He was Director of the Institute of Engineering and is currently Administrative Secretary, both positions at UNAM.

He has been a member of the Internal Council, the Judging Commission and the PRIDE Commission of the Institute of Engineering, the Technical Council of Scientific Research, the University Council and the PRIDE Commission of the Faculty of Engineering and the Judging Commission of the IIMAS. He was a representative of the tutors in the Academic Committees of the Master’s and Doctorate Program in Engineering and the Computer Science and Engineering Program and participated in the Council for Graduate Studies.

He has published more than 65 articles in indexed journals (JCR), 100 articles in length in indexed international conference proceedings (Web of Science or Scopus), more than 100 articles in length in other conferences and more than 50 reports and technical reports. His works have been cited more than 2,800 times (Google Scholar). He has 2 patents granted. He has supervised more than 90 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral theses and taught undergraduate and graduate degrees for more than 35 years.

He belongs to the Academy of Engineering, of which he is currently President, and to the Mexican Academy of Sciences.

He is a member of the Mexican Association of Automatic Control, of which he was President, he’s also a member of the Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers and of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

He was an associate editor of the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control and is an associate editor of the Journal of Applied Research and Technology.

He coordinated CONACYT’s Thematic Research Network on Energy Sources and belonged to the Advisory Council of the National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy (CONUEE). He was an Independent Director of the National Center for Energy Control.
